Regarded by many leading critics as an ideal interpreter of the music of Gustav Mahler, Janice Taylor is one of the few mezzo-sopranos to have preformed all of his symphonies and song cycles. The scope of the vocal colors elicited by the diverse nature of her repertoire has produced an equally varied perception of her vocal range. After her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Mahler's Resurection Symphony, the Philadelphia Inuirer commented: " Janice Taylor's creamy mezzo soprano voice sounded the emotional depths of her text. It is a voice to float above the orchestra's richness, and her willingness to project the sense of the words put her voice at the service of the music in a way that is not universally done." In contrast after her apearance at the celebrated MIDEM Festival in Cannes, the Nice-Matin proclaimed: "The great contraltos in the world today cannot be counted except on the fingers of one hand. She is one of these."
Highly regarded for her ease of creating an atmosphere through melody and texts of many languages, she has established a reputation as an artist of exceptional communicative ability. Her dedication to the heritage of the art song prompted Montreal's La Presse to remark: "In a world of music where effrontery and vulgarity have become common currency, Janice Taylor restores dignity to the very name artist."
